HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED The couple started thinking about marriage soon after the 2015 SCOTUS ruling. Jeff had planned a Thanksgiving trip to Marfa as an anniversary gift and intended to propose. Brandon had an inkling this might happen and devised his own simultaneous proposal. While walking among a massive installation of Donald Judd’s concrete sculptures, Brandon popped the question, and Jeff quickly followed.

REHEARSAL DINNER They hosted a rehearsal “happy hour” and dinner at the Pizza Foundation, followed by an informal guest welcome party at Planet Marfa.

WEDDING DAY WEATHER Sunny and cool, just as they’d hoped. Clouds rolled in during the ceremony, followed by a perfect sunset.

THEME The two have long appreciated Marfa’s stunning natural landscape and modern art and architecture. Their wedding style reflected this, balancing modernist and Texan elements.

DESSERT A two-tier buttercream naked cake adorned with flowers, plus red-velvet whoopie pies, dark chocolate truffles, honey-lavender crispy rice treats, and lemon squares.

MUSIC The pair spent weeks creating playlists. Jeff: “Our first dance was to ‘Somersault’ by Zero 7, which contains the line, ‘you put my feet back on the ground,’ a lyric I sent Brandon early in our relationship.”

IF THEY HAD TO DO IT OVER Brandon: “I remember trying to rush through pictures, thinking people were waiting for us. It ended up going so quickly that I wish we’d enjoyed those special moments a bit longer.”

FAVORITE DETAIL The couple’s close friend wrote and officiated the ceremony. Jeff: “What she wrote perfectly reflected our personalities and journey.”

UNEXPECTED EVENT Brandon surprised Jeff with a heartfelt note before the ceremony. Jeff: “The message inside reminded me of our journey over the past nine years.”
