After planning thousands of parties over the course of his career for such notables as Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, and Madonna, Ken Sharples—the acclaimed creative director of Premiere Select luxury event rentals in Austin—presented his fiancé, Pat Soffner, a grand Roaring Twenties wedding reception last November. “Pat is the love of my life. I wanted our wedding to be perfection, with every detail that could be imagined—down to the fireworks and a green light illuminating Lake Austin, just like in The Great Gatsby,” says Sharples.

Lavish details were many, including Sharples’s own two-tone blue Rolls-Royce and the jaw-dropping setting—the 1920s mansion at Austin’s Westwood Country Club. Dancers and entertainers performed atop a clear stage that covered the pool, which served as the party’s centerpiece. Colored lights illuminated the towering oak trees and the 150 guests costumed in period flapper dresses and tails. “I love the decadence of the ’20s,” Sharples says, adding that his reception was “all about extravagance. It was very boozy back then, so I made sure the martinis flowed and champagne popped all night.”

The grooms wore jackets by the clothier who designed the men’s attire in Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby. Sharples recruited a slew of vaunted Austin vendors, including photographers Jerry Hays and Brittany Jean Rhodenbaugh, the Flower Studio, Dragonfly Designs (for the invitations), Big Dog Pyro (for the Lake Austin fireworks display), Intelligent Lighting Design, and—of course—Premiere Select. Simon Lee Bakery designed a dreamy 6-foot-tall white wedding cake. And entertainment included a troupe of singers and dancers, a bejeweled drag queen, and a male dancer dressed in sock garters and white skivvies who shimmied inside a giant champagne glass filled with bubbles (!)
