NAMES Kelly Erbar & Rajean Witt-Thomas.

LIVE IN Jersey Village, suburb of Houston, Texas.

OCCUPATIONS Kelly is a leasing manager; Rajean is a veterinary receptionist.

HOW THEY MET At college in Springfield, Mo.

HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED Kelly had a friend pick Rajean up in a limousine at her workplace. A scavenger hunt eventually led Rajean to a bar, where Kelly stood waiting to propose.

BACHELORETTE PARTY Kelly and her bridal party celebrated in Denver during Pride Week, where the festivities included swimming in the mountains and checking out a local brewery. Kelly: “I’m the first and only gay person in my group to get married. Throughout the whole weekend, I felt so much love and excitement from everybody.”

REHEARSAL DINNER In a private room at Ula’s Mexican Restaurant in Houston. A slideshow featured photos of the couple with each of the dinner guests.

WEDDING-DAY WEATHER Hot. Fortunately, they were able to bring inside what had been planned as an outdoor wedding. Kelly: “Not being from Houston originally, we weren’t prepared for the heat and humidity.”

WEDDING COLORS Shades of purple and blue.

THEME “Literary with rustic touches.” The couple preferred to make most of the wedding accessories themselves.

FLOWERS Rajean created the table flowers, boutonnieres, and bouquets using repurposed book pages and US maps.

DIY HIGHLIGHTS They used a heart-shape paper punch to make table confetti, and they created Mad Libs–style wedding programs for guests to fill out.

THE MENU The couple chose family-owned, farm-to-table purveyors. Two appetizers were passed—crab cakes and caprese salad skewers. Entrée options were Tuscan chicken and eggplant Parmesan. There was an open bar, too. Kelly: “We purchased the alcohol ourselves and were able to return the unopened bottles.”

DESSERT A gluten-free, buttercream chocolate cake for the wedding table. Guests enjoyed cupcakes in amaretto, chocolate, and vanilla chocolate chip flavors. Kelly also surprised her new wife with a TARDIS cake, modeled after the time machine in Rajean’s favorite TV show, Doctor Who.

MUSIC The band, August 63, which the pair had enjoyed at a previous event, kept guests dancing long into the night. The couple’s first dance song: Beyoncé’s “Love on Top.”

IF THEY HAD TO DO IT OVER They would have hired two makeup artists. Having just the one for the entire bridal party and mothers made for stressful preparation.

FAVORITE DETAIL The couple’s mothers and a grandmother selected meaningful poems and Bible verses to read aloud, which made the ceremony especially personal.

UNIQUE ELEMENTS OF THE DAY They orchestrated the “first look,” when the couple could first see each other, to include family and friends. Kelly and Rajean were led to a spot blindfolded in front of their guests, and then removed them on the count of three.

UNEXPECTED EVENT Having gotten engaged before the Supreme Court ruling, they didn’t know whether they’d ever be able to legally marry in Texas. When the officiating reverend said the words, “By the power vested in me [by] the United States of America and the state of Texas …,” the couple became overwhelmed with emotion.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS Weddings can be stressful. Remember that it’s your day. LGBT weddings are already unique—allow yourselves the freedom to truly make it your own.

THE DAY IN THREE WORDS Loving, exciting, personalized.
