Weddings of Our Own: Christina & Melony

Conroe, April 2, 2016

NAMES Christina Andrews & Melony Schexnayder.
LIVE IN Crosby, outside Houston.
OCCUPATIONS Christina is an ICU nurse; Melony is a clinical nurse coordinator at Davita Dialysis.
HOW THEY MET First day of nursing school at San Jacinto College.
HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED Christina proposed on Valentine’s Day 2015 in Austin (their favorite getaway spot), during a tour of local vineyards. At their last stop, Driftwood Estates, she popped the question while the two enjoyed wine and an amazing view overlooking the vineyard. They’d already planned to marry before the Supreme Court decision, but had originally decided on a “pseudo-ceremony” in Texas and then traveling to a state with marriage equality to obtain official licenses. “Luckily, we didn’t have to,” Christina says. “It meant so much to us to marry legally in our home state in front of our family and friends.”
BACHELORETTE PARTY They had a combined bachelorette and birthday party (for Melony) in New Orleans. Unfortunately, Melony broke her ankle when a passerby bumped into her as they departed a club. Christina: “We were all set for a wild and crazy weekend—we just didn’t realize how wild.” Following surgery, Melony had to wear a boot, right through the wedding—a challenging obstacle, but everything worked out and they still had a blast.
REHEARSAL DINNER Bucca di Beppo, Shenandoah.
WEDDING-DAY WEATHER Absolutely perfect: sunny, 75 degrees, and barely a cloud in the sky.
WEDDING COLORS Shades of purple and lime green.
THEME Fun-loving, country-chic.
FLOWERS Purple, white, and green lilies, irises, roses, and orchids.
DIY HIGHLIGHTS They created a candy bar that featured their wedding-theme colors, and they provided flat rocks and a paint pen for guests to inscribe well-wishes.
THE MENU Chicken-fried steak, Cajun-style grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, garden salad, and dinner rolls.
DESSERT Four-tier almond cake, one side of which contained a traditional design. On the other, the cake opened to reveal a different Avengers superhero on each tier: Ironman, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. The couple also had a chocolate fountain.
MUSIC A DJ provided music, and they chose “No” by Jason Aldean, for their first dance.
IF THEY HAD TO DO IT OVER They’d have packed for their honeymoon before the wedding and planned a longer reception. Christina: “The reception was four hours, but the first hour was for pictures, and we felt the next three hours went by in a flash. Take time to enjoy it!”
FAVORITE DETAILS That Avengers cake, along with the superhero T-shirts that members of the bridal party wore under their dress shirts, along with matching cufflinks.
UNIQUE ELEMENT OF THE DAY The wedding party danced down the aisle, and during the introduction at the reception, the brides chose songs for each member of the wedding party to dance to.
UNEXPECTED EVENT Melony’s mother attending. “She has not been in support of the relationship at all,” Christina says, “but her attendance was very special to us.”
HOW THE WEDDING DIFFERED FROM HOW THEY HAD IMAGINED IT Prior to the wedding, the couple had taken dance lessons and planned a choreographed first dance. Melony wasn’t able to dance, however, because of her broken ankle. Christina: “We made the best of it and will put those lessons to use when we renew our vows down the road.”
ADVICE FOR OTHERS Plan ahead. Many vendors book months in advance, and some items have to be custom made. They also recommend obtaining a contract or receipt with date of delivery from every vendor. They had originally ordered suspenders and bow ties from an acquaintance’s shop without obtaining a receipt in writing, and the vendor never came through. On a happier note, they’d been told by friends not to skimp on the photographer and videographer, and although they spent a lot on these services, they found the investment to be worth every penny.
THE DAY IN THREE WORDS Happy, beautiful, perfect.
