The Garden Gala: Mediterranean Wedding Style in the Heart of Texas

"Imagine the kind of wedding you might see at a country home in Provence or a chateau in Tuscany."

“I set this shoot at Chateau Polonez because I’m increasingly meeting couples who want destination weddings but either can’t afford to get married abroad or have concerns that some family members won’t be able to make a long trip,” says photographer Dawn Browne of Degrees North Images, who teamed with planning and styling maven Elizabeth Abshire to create this supremely romantic garden party. “I hate to see couples settle for a run-of-the-mill reception,” says Browne.

Chateau Polonez evokes the fanciful splendor of a faraway castle. “Imagine the kind of wedding you might see at a country home in Provence or a chateau in Tuscany,” Browne says.

Old-world details abound. The elegant place settings feature cornflower-blue matted-satin lamour napkins, simple white china, and luxurious glass-beaded silver chargers. Ruffled silver-medallion muslin overlay tumbles dramatically from beneath each place setting. A classic three-tier ruffle cake with rose-tinted buttercream frosting and delicate rosettes, along with hand-lettered royal- and powder-blue invitations, continue the summer-garden theme. It’s a touch of Europe, right in northwest Houston.

The grooms, sporting dapper Adolfo (left) and Ben Sherman blazers with Beyond Creations bow ties, strike a companionable pose. Olive leaves, rosemary sprigs, and dried French lavender in their boutonnieres echo the Mediterranean countryside tablescape. One platter abounds with grapes and berries, the other with artfully arranged antipasto, including Kalamata and garlic-stuffed olives, marinated artichoke hearts, creamy havarti and white cheddar, prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella and dry salami, crackers, and baguettes.

Bookended by chichi vintage wingback chairs provided by the renowned Houston event-rental company Vintage Indulgence and centered before a terra-cotta courtyard fireplace, the head table is laid out with sage, rosemary, and lavender, combined with pale-blue delphinium, soft-pink snapdragons, eucalyptus, variegated ivy, and pink jasmine vine. Repeated on the mantelpiece, the arrangement evokes the colors and fragrances of a Provençal garden.
